Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Outshine Movie Royalty on BAFTA Red Carpet in Floral McQueen Gown
Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge outshone Hollywood and British movie royalty on BAFTA red carpet to mark the yearly celebration of the theatrical arts. Kate wore a black off-the-shoulder princess gown in a floral pattern by design house Alexander McQueen and stunned with a pair of sparkling statement earrings and a gorgeous diamond bracelet belonging to Queen Elizabeth II.
William chose to wear black matte loafers and matching tie for the occasion, which he and his Princess wife did not sit at the royal box during, as is customary. The reason was that Prince William was presenting one of the awards, so the royal couple sat front and center, with their aids and security directly behind. Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, selected to wear a custom version of an Alexander McQueen gown from the designer’s 2016 Resort Collection, made bespoke for her to mark the occasion which celebrates the arts and glorifies British talent.
The long tiered gown is listed as having a ‘black mix violet jaquard’ print, and you can see in the close up images the fabric is indeed heavy and raised. Each tier of the spring chic design is separated by a solid black satin ribbon.
The original Alexander Mcqueen gown featured thin straps, boning within the transparent bodice which featured built in bra construction. Organza layering was featured throughout the skirt, which also included a sheer element.
You can see the Duchess of Cambridge has removed all of the sheer elements, opting for a solid, heavy fabric on both the bodice and skirt, nary a hint of tulle in sight. Her cosmetics were fresh and spring-themed with glittering neutral shades perfect for winter’s thaw and the spectacular company she kept that night.
The Duchess’ jewels were not the only thing that sparkled, Kate’s eyes were also dramatically done up in a stunning cat-eye with thick black liner and also shimmering highlights on her blusher-laden cheeks and sparkling shakes on her lips, eyes, and face.
The trademark ribbon tiers, however, remain, and add a romantic twist that speaks to days gone by, when ladies all stepped out in floor-length gowns for every occasion.
Though the Duke and Duchess strive there best not to outshine royalty, in this case they may have missed the mark. Kate shone with beautifully fresh yet sophisticated makeup, and stunning show-stopper earrings that sparkled and had everyone talking.
Her elegant chignon, artfully arranged to add fullness to the top of her crown, was a perfect contrast to the jewels and the rather complicated dress. Her makeup featured a slick cat-eye and dramatic eyelashes, in addition to a rosy pink blush and matching spring pink lips that set off her fair English complexion to its best advantage.
One might speculate it is her most sophisticated and beautiful make-up look to date, especially combined with the winning hair and earring combination. She accessorized with a new clutch in black and gold with the prominent rose motif as the clasp. Her priceless sapphire engagement ring and welsh gold wedding band, the last piece created from a special nugget reserved for royal brides and grooms, also sparkled on her hand.
What did you think of Duchess Kate’s black floral gown? Does it make you yearn for spring, or do you wish she had chosen something else for the BAFTA red carpet?
