Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands Celebrates 79th Birthday

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, formerly Queen Beatrix, celebrates her 79th Birthday today.

Princess Beatrix was born on January 31, 1938 at the Soestdijk Palace in Baarn, Netherlands. She is the first child of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and German aristocrat Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld.

She served as the Queen of the Netherlands for 33 years before abdicating her throne to her son, King Willem-Alexander.

Just before her birthday in 2013, Queen Beatrix announced her decision to abdicate from the throne and the following April she handed the reigns of monarchy to her son. The tradition of abdicating the Dutch throne in favor of the new generation was continued from Queen Beatrix’s mother and grandmother before her.

Princess Beatrix still carries out limited engagements and lives in a small moated palace called Drakensteyn Castle in the Dutch countryside. She is beloved by the people of the Netherlands and is considered to be a national treasure and an influential member of the European aristocracy.
